Founder Story: Tony Horton, Founder of P90X

By the time Tony Horton reached fifth grade, he had already moved 7 times. Each move came with its own set of challenges—new schools, unfamiliar environments, and relentless bullying. Tony had a severe stutter, and combined with his small, non-athletic build, he became an easy target.

His childhood was fraught with difficulties as he navigated the emotional toll of being the "new kid" over and over again.

As Tony entered his teenage years, he sought solace in sports, hoping it would boost his self-esteem. However, weighing in at only 98 pounds, sports often brought more frustration than confidence. He was frequently berated by coaches during practices and spent most games on the bench. Rather than improving his self-worth, these experiences only deepened his insecurities.

In college, Tony shifted gears, studying theater in an effort to conquer his speech impediment. It was during this period that he received some career advice:

If he wanted to land roles in Hollywood, he needed to be in shape. This advice set the wheels in motion for a future Tony couldn’t have imagined.

Tony enrolled in a weightlifting class, and for the first time, exercise became more than just a requirement—it became a passion. His instructor made fitness fun and engaging, and Tony quickly realized that with discipline and dedication, he could achieve real, tangible results. The gym became his sanctuary, a place where his work ethic yielded visible outcomes. Fitness provided Tony with the confidence and structure he had been craving for years.

Armed with only $400 and a few college credits shy of earning his degree, Tony took a leap of faith and headed to Hollywood to pursue his acting dreams. Unfortunately, life in Hollywood wasn’t the glamorous dream he had in his head. To make ends meet, Tony worked a variety of odd jobs—handyman, gardener, go-go dancer, stand-up comedian, waiter, and mime.

For months, he slept on the floor of a friend's apartment, subsisting on little more than Cheerios and yogurt. But Tony was nothing if not persistent.

While pursuing his acting career, Tony also continued to deepen his passion for fitness. He worked out at the same gym as Arnold Schwarzenegger, studying bodybuilders and fitness experts with a keen eye. But Tony didn’t want the bulky, rigid physique that often came with bodybuilding. He focused instead on routines that promoted a leaner, more flexible body—one that was both strong and agile. His unique approach to fitness caught the attention of others, and soon, people started asking Tony to train them.

Still chasing his Hollywood dreams, Tony found himself auditioning for a role that would change the trajectory of his life in an unexpected way. It was during this audition that he met Carl Daikeler, a veteran infomercial producer. Carl was impressed by Tony’s charisma and fitness knowledge and hired him as his personal trainer.

In just 3 months, Tony helped Carl achieve physical results he had never thought possible.

Carl was blown away by the transformative changes in his own body and quickly realized that Tony’s unique training program could be revolutionary. He saw the potential to market Tony’s system to the masses.

Over the next few years, Tony and Carl worked together to turn Tony’s in-person training into a 90-day, on-camera workout program. The result? P90X—a groundbreaking home fitness DVD that combined rigorous workouts with a marketing strategy centered around “before and after” transformations.

Since its launch, P90X became the best-selling fitness program in America generating over $700 million in revenue and selling more than 4 million copies. Tony Horton has authored three books, appeared in almost every major fitness outlet, trained celebrities like Bruce Springsteen, Usher, Billy Idol, and Annie Lennox, and inspired millions of people around the world to take control of their health and fitness.
